Deer in the woods
I see you. You see me. (slight edits) — Photo Diane Nilan

“April, come she will…” as Simon and Garfunkel crooned many years ago. April’s almost gone, but I didn’t want to have to play catch up, so I’ll sneak in under the wire.

This deer greeted me as I stepped outside one morning in early April. I was surprised she paused long enough for me to whip my iPhone out.

Fooled you! Other than this pic, I’m going with a flag theme this month. I’ve got what some would say is an obsession with flag pics. Maybe I’m not willing to cede patriotism to the flag wavers who don’t really seem to value our democracy. Maybe.

This Country…The Real Thing

When I hopped out of my friend’s car downtown in tiny St. George, KS (where speed limits are vigorously enforced!), I came upon this hodgepodge of reflections in their (former) bank window. This country! It’s the real thing. At least in St. George.

Beheaded

Traveling backroads as I do, I never ceased to be amazed at sights like this. The construction delay on this Colorado backroad didn’t disturb me at all since I spotted Terry and his patriotic garb. I had time to chat with him and he was more than happy to pose. Maybe not beheaded, but how about betrothed (as in married to our country)?

Pretty Isn’t Pretty

I’m not a dress-up kinda gal. Never have been. I’ve got a good friend who LOVES fancy shoes, so these would be her thing. She’d say they’re pretty. I’d say they’re not. They certainly feed my flag fetish!

Half a World Away

I’ve been to Tanzania three times since 2013 to visit projects our nonprofit, Friends of Imiliwaha, funds. Traveling across that country always means hectic traffic jams unlike anything in the good ol’ US of A.

These little scooter vehicles are everywhere and their eclectic decor reflects the frenetic tempo of the vendors lining the sides of what passes for roads. Half a world away.
