I’ve lived full-time in a van for 15+ years. Kinda by choice (www.hearus.us), and certainly purposeful, to chronicle family/youth homelessness. I’ve filmed documentaries, wrote books, and have done what I can to call attention to the largely ignored issue of homelessness and housing insecurity that besets our nation.
Nomadland has done a service — creating a bump of awareness about the dire reality of millions of aging Americans who lack viable, and affordable, options as we age. It wasn’t perfect, and certainly shied away from the big issues, Amazon being the poster-child of economic disparity.
I’m 70. Healthy, with modest resources, nomadic by choice. The dearth of options and the surging crisis of homelessness will likely keep me on the road for some time. Not a good career plan.
Maybe Frances would like to do Nomadland 2, and take a look at the homeless adult feeder program — the millions of families and youth experiencing homelessness who will likely end up even worse off than Fern.
