No one much likes February, but March doesn’t fare much better, weather-wise at least. For me, however, March has been a milestone marker.

March 2007 was when my first series of films was released. My Own Four Walls gives a significant, but invisible, segment of the homeless population — kids — a chance to share what it’s like to experience homelessness and what school means to them. The 19-minute title film, my first video attempt, and arguably my best, will likely make you cry, or at least will open your eyes.

This week, we remember what we were doing in March 2020 when the pandemic was officially acknowledged in the U.S. I ended up parking my van-home in a Kansas friend’s driveway and writing the book that had swirled in my head for several years.

My friends had been pushing me to write another book — about my 15 years of travel across America’s backroads. I hesitated, not wanting to focus attention on me.
