I hope Covid doesn’t continue to ravage as long as modern homelessness has. I was a newbie stepping into the world of deep poverty and homelessness back in the mid-80s, about the time we pinpoint the rise of modern homelessness. Never would I have thought I’d still be “at it” 35 years later.

What do we learn from these long-lasting maladies? Certainly not patience! I’m profoundly frustrated with peoples’ inability to grasp the seriousness of Covid, and the need to practice common sense (to me) safeguards designed to tamp the spread of this invisible killer.

I’m also massively frustrated with Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema for sabotaging the most significant federal action to address poverty, family support and affordable housing in modern times. And my frustration explodes with each act of cruelty, clueless or intentional, towards those who have no place to call home.

But valid reasons for frustration cannot overtake the need to pursue and nurture positive steps to alleviate struggles and suffering. I try to channel my inner compassion to those impacted by Covid. Beyond death, this pandemic has ravaged lives. Job loss is just the tip of the iceberg. Other than those with obscene wealth, Covid can take a person down — economically…
