Vilified? My Heart Breaks…

For the Family(ies) Facing Homelessness, Not this Whining Attorney

My earlier post today evidently vilified the Urban Housing Solutions attorney. I shared a segment of a news story where he vilified a mother trying to keep a roof over her family’s heads.

I’d almost feel bad because I don’t like spreading bad feelings. But, nah. I. Just. Can’t.

What I feel bad about is knowing that many families get treated like UHS allegedly is treating Ms. Davis, the mother with nine children on the edge of homelessness.

It happens everywhere. My latest film project, Hidden in Plain Sight- Families Experiencing Housing Instability in New Mexico, features a mom of 5 who took in other family members, totaling 9 kids/adults, who spent months in homeless situations in Las Cruces, NM. I could find families in this deplorable, fixable plight in every community.

What I’ve learned, from keeping in contact with families I knew in my 15 years of running shelters, is homelessness is always right around the corner. It can come at you any time. It causes and exacerbates trauma. It’s expensive. Debt collectors relentlessly pursue you. You always feel like a failed parent…

I digress.

First, read Mr. Mazer’s comments:
