Way to go, Matthew! Keeping it real, not disputing ugly reality when it exists, but shining a light on and dealing directly with unenlightened behavior.
Now how do we insert families experiencing homelessness into the equation? Many of those youth were probably ousted from their families because of homelessness (in addition to being tossed out because of issues with parents over sexual identity, pregnancy, and other issues). Many shelters don’t allow older kids, forcing parents to make choices and farm kids out.
You have your work cut out for you on this sidewalk jerk challenge, but you sound like you value treating people as people. That works wonders…I know. I ran a big suburban shelter in IL for many years.
